Three areas of focus

Our three research centres, along with our Economics and Fiscal Policy resources, provide original research, analysis and commentary on the most important issues affecting western Canada’s long-term prosperity and quality of life.

The Centre for Trade & Investment Policy

A robust export strategy is vital to the western Canadian economy’s health. Our relationship with our largest export partner, the U.S., is evolving and that underscores the need to build new markets around the world. Seizing those opportunities and investing in infrastructure to service those markets is imperative.

The Centre for Natural Resources Policy

Our natural resources are important to Canada’s prosperity. The world is hungry for western Canada’s food, energy and materials. Without rebuilding the social contract that enables our resources economy to operate, however, our ability to benefit from the rising global demand for resources will be hamstrung.

The Centre for Human Capital Policy

International competition and opportunities in the knowledge economy are creating demand for a more adaptable and creative labour force. The West needs to improve its education system and skills training programs, attract more international talent and increase Aboriginal participation in the economy.

Economic & Fiscal Policy Division

The Economic and Fiscal Policy Division analyzes and comments on the broader economic, social and political issues affecting the West. This includes issues such as government reliance on volatile natural resource revenues, the impact of a struggling global economy on the West, or changes to federal-provincial fiscal arrangements.
